Powder Coating Equipment Basics

Powder coating is the process of applying a protective coating on metal, wood, plastic, paper or other materials using a powder that is either sprayed on or dipped into the material. There are many different types of powder coatings including spray coating and dip coating. Although there are many benefits to using these two forms of coating, many businesses are choosing to use spray coating equipment. The two main types of powder coating equipment include machines that can spray the powder and another type that can dip the material and apply the powder as needed. Spray coating equipment is stationary and is similar to a paint booth. In a spray coating machine, the coating is applied to a workpiece and then is allowed to dry. It is important to allow the coating time to dry because the thicker the coating, the longer it will take for it to completely harden. Once the material is hardened, the machine uses a rotary tool to bump the coating into the substrate.

Another type of powder coating equipment is the duster. This piece of equipment runs just like a vacuum cleaner, which means the particles are blasted away quickly and effectively. These types of coatings can provide much more control than what the typical spray machine offers. For instance, there are some powders that are stiff and require a different application technique.

There are three basic types of powder coating; wet-pumping, dry-pumping and aerosol powder coating. Wet-pumping is the most common type and works by loading the powder onto a carrier, spraying the powder into a material and then allowing it to dry. The powder coating is spread uniformly over the surface that is being coated. Dry-pumping uses a can or a bag to mix the powder and apply it. Powder coating equipment is not typically sold as a complete set. Most of the time, there are only one or two pieces that will be needed. For example, a mixing drum is necessary for pouring the powder into a proper container. If there is a need for additional equipment like a spray gun or a blending station, the purchaser would have to find a supplier that sells powder coating systems separately.  

Powder coating is not a difficult process but it does require knowledge of the materials and equipment that are being used.
